Kula Sends SOS To Amaechi …As Communal Crisis Deepens
As stakeholder in the oil-rich Kula in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State fight for the soul of the community, the paramount ruler of the community has called for the intervention of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi
Addressing newsmen shortly after a town hall meeting in Kula at the weekend, the Amanyanabo, King Koroma Amabipi-Eleki described as unfortunate plans by a few to balkanise his kingdom
The Tide learnt that Chevron produces 25,000 barrels of crude oil per-day (bpd) while Shell produces 18,000 bpd with attendant benefits to Kula community.
Early last year, there were accusations and counter-accusations over the appointment of a traditional overseer of the oil-rich parts of the community, a development which the monarch blamed on the local government council leadership.
In a swift reaction, Vice Chairman of the council, Mr Stanley Benibo had in a press briefing accused the Amanyanabo of high handedness, and urged stakeholders to fashion a way out of the woods.
The Tide learnt that the oil companies have suspended transaction with any member of the community pending resolution of the crisis.
It was to address the issues that a town hall meeting was called last Saturday, a forum the council leadership allegedly shunned.
Briefing newsmen afterwards, King Amabipi-Eleki who was confirmed in 2009, by the Amaechi administration as Amanayanabo of Kula expressed deep worries over attempts by some state government officials and their local government associates, to cause disunity within the community.
“We came out of the meeting to say that Kula is one indivisible entity. All the chieftaincy stools should work with the Amanyanabo.
“The local government and the Ministry of Chieftaincy should not balkanise our community” “, he said, and warned against politicisation of the issue.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Charles Okayi has described as false the alleged involvement in the purported balkanisation of Kula community.
In a radio message aired in Port Harcourt, the commissioner described the allegation as baseless, and urged the people to disregard it.
