‘Promote Dignity Of Children With Disabilities’
Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Betty Efekodha, has called for more awareness on the need to enhance the dignity and the rights of children with disabilities in Nigeria.
Efekodha made the call in a speech to commemorate the Day of the African Child in Asaba. The theme of the event is: “The Rights of Children with Disabilities: the Duty to Protect, Respect, Promote and Fulfill. ’’
She called on governments at all levels and other relevant bodies to promote the rights of such children in order to ameliorate their plight and afford them the opportunity to contribute to the society.
The Commissioner said that this was the only way that the country could build and sustain a society where the rule of law for all could be guaranteed.
Efekodha said that the occasion “is used to bring to the front burner the situation of children in Africa and Nigeria in particular in accordance with the United Nation’s Convention on Child’s Right’’.
She said it was also to enhance awareness on the rights of children and to draw the attention of policy makers and civil societies in African countries, to the plight of African children.
The commissioner called on all stakeholders to involve children in the process of formulating policies that affect them.
