Rep Awards Scholarship To Indigent Students
The member representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Dr. Eddie Mbadiwe, has promised to commit his resources to education, agricultural revolution and youth empowerment.
Fielding questions from journalists in Enugu recently Dr. Mbadiwe, disclosed that in pursuance of what he described as educational revolution for his people, 15 indigent but brilliant students had been given scholarship to study in universities in the country while salaries of more than 15 teachers in three secondary schools in his constituency were now being bankrolled by him.
He explained that he had to take over the payment of teachers’ salaries in those colleges, as students were running away from them owing to lack of teachers, since government could no longer sustain them.
The legislator expressed joy that his quick intervention had worked out, as all the students who had deserted the schools during the trial period, had returned and are now enjoying their tutorials without hitches.
According to him “I felt that the best legacy I would like to be remembered for is a political leader who gave education to the less privileged, made them independent and enabled them to help others to grow instead of relying on government for survival”.
In addition, the law maker and former governor of Rotary International District 9140, had also distributed educational materials to schools in the area as well as empowered some men and women in the rural communities with funds to establish small scale business concerns to sustain their families.
Dr. Mbadiwe maintained that as long as Nigerian politicians continue to “induce the people with food items or money”, the rate of poverty in the land would continue to remain high. He stated that what Nigerians needed most now were durable economic programmes that would check poverty and underdevelopment, pointing out that “when that is done, security can be guaranteed’’
Hon. Mbadiwe, therefore, used the forum to challenge corporate bodies and the wealthy in the society to channel their resources to educational empowerment of the people and development of the economy instead of wasting such funds on luxury.
