NFF Member Flays Nigerians’ Passion For European Leagues
A board member of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Felix Anyansi-Agwu, has condemned Nigerians’ passion for European and English football leagues in preference to the local league.
Anyansi-Agwu told newsmen in Aba, Abia State that the apathy toward the local league was not helping the development of football in the country.
“Nigerians prefer to watch European leagues at the expense of the local one; a development that is seriously affecting the growth of Nigerian leagues,” the official said.
Ayansi-Agwu said the poor attitude of Nigerians to the local league led to the low turn out of spectators at premiership games.
Anyasi-Agwu, who is also the Chairman of Enyimba, lamented the poor turn out of spectators at league matches in Aba in spite of the enormous publicity in the print and electronic media.
“The situation is not peculiar to Aba; the same is happening in Enugu, Owerri and other centres across the country, where the Nigerian Premier League or other local matches are played.
“Probably they have found a kind of leisure with English and European football,” Anyansi-Agwu said.
He said the situation would negatively affect the talent hunt and other soccer-related programmes targeted at the youths.
