House Committee Seeks Adoption Of Diaspora Day
The House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora in Abuja said it would work in collaboration with government to ensure that August 1, was adopted as the Diaspora Day in the country.
Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN –Lagos), dropped the hint at a meeting with the High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago to Nigeria, Mr Nyahuma Obika .
According to the Erewa, the day will also be used to honour Nigerians in Diaspora who have distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavour .
She said that the Committee would also work hard to involve the African Union in the celebrations.
The legislator urged Nigerians to participate in the celebration of the emancipation of Africans from slavery.
Erewa said that in spite of the abolition of slave trade, African leaders had subjected their people to abject poverty.
She said that the celebration of Diaspora day would be beneficiary to all Africans.
Earlier, Obika said Nigeria was well positioned to lead in the quest for the observance of the abolition of slave trade.
He described the slavery days as a difficult period in the history of Trinidad and Tobago and other countries.
Rep. Ganama Titsi (PDP-Adamawa), a member of the committee, said that the call for the observance of abolition of slave trade was a challenge for the committee.

APC Resumes Electronic Membership Registration Nationwide
In a statement issued yesterday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Felix Morka, said the exercise would take place in all wards and designated centres nationwide.
He called on existing members to update their records, while encouraging new entrants to join the party through the digital platform.
“As the electronic membership registration exercise resumes in all wards and designated locations nationwide, we urge existing members to validate their membership while new members are encouraged to register and join the progressive family,” Mr Morka said.
According to him, eligibility for registration is limited to individuals aged 18 and above who possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
The party said the initiative is part of efforts to modernise its operations by transitioning to a digital database that would enhance record accuracy and accessibility.
Mr Morka noted that the e-registration would “digitise the party’s membership register, ensure the integrity of records, and enhance efficient access to membership data for planning and management decisions.”
He added that the move is also aimed at promoting internal democracy within the party and strengthening its commitment to democratic innovation.
The APC had previously introduced electronic registration as part of broader reforms to streamline its membership system and improve organisational efficiency.
