‘Persons With Disability, Rivers Priority’
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi, says his administration is committed to ameliorating the plight of persons with disabilities in the state.
Governor Amaechi said this yesterday during the first capacity building forum for Persons With Disabilities (PWD) organised by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation in Port Harcourt.
Represented by his deputy, Engr Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, noted that “disabilities are accidents of life that are not contemplated by anyone,” stressing that “ it is the responsibilities of society to provide support for the disabled.”
He said it was part of societal responsibility to incorporate such persons in its activities, and therefore urged the PWDs to use such forums to develop themselves and fit into the scheme of things, while noting that the Rivers State Government would not fail to incorporate them in its policies and programmes.
Governor Amaechi lauded the Ministry for initiating the programme, describing it as novel and development- oriented.
In her remarks, Founder of the Economic Support Initiative(ESI), Dame Judith Amaechi stated that the programme would help build disabled persons to contribute to society.
Dame Amaechi later hinted that she would like to incorporate activities of disabled persons in her pet project,’’ basically I would like to support persons with disablities but that does not necessarily mean that am going to run it as NGO, but any group of persons or any organisation that takes that up as their own passion, personally, I would try to support them’’.
She described those with disabilities as God’s own handwork,’’ I believe all of us are one and made for the purpose of God ‘’.
Earlier in his remarks, Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Hon. Joe Poroma opined that it’ was the duty of all members of society to reduce the challenge of those with disabilities.
He stated,’’ it’s only with concerted effort that the battle will be won…There is no gainsaying the fact that persons living with disability have suffered gross discrimination, neglect, deprivation and stigmatisation ‘’.
Hon. Poroma however tasked the PWDs to reject every pitiable disposition, inferiority complex and face life challenge since there is ability in disability.
