Environmentalist Tasks FG On Permaculture
The Federal Government, has been called upon to enact a law on Permaculture, to protect the environment, the eco-system and wildlife.
Mr Lawal Adeosun, an environmentalist with the Permaculture Forest Gardens at the Gberefun Point-of-No-Return in Badagry, made the call during an interview with newsmen at the weekend in the area.
He said that it was always better to take pre-emptive action to secure the environment against degradation.
“I want the Federal Government to enact a law on Permaculture, to ban the abuse of the environment, the eco-system and the preservation of wildlife,” he said.
Permaculture is the study of how to preserve the environment, wildlife and the eco-system against human abuse.
He urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to stem the impending consequences of tampering with the environment and the eco-system, such as bush burning and flooding.
“The idea of bush burning, using fertiliser to grow plants, or using explosives to harvest fish, are bad practices,” he said.
Adeosun wondered how many generations of fish would have been destroyed in one full swoop when explosives are used to harvest fish from rivers.
The environmentalist, who said that it was better to use natural manure to grow food crops, warned that the use of fertiliser could cause cancer and other related diseases.
He, therefore , urged the Federal and State Governments to arrest and prosecute anybody found guilty of degrading the environment, particularly through the abuse of the eco-system and the depletion of wildlife.
