‘Ports Concessioning Eliminates Casualisation’
President, National Association of Stevedoring Companies, Mr. Bolaji Sunmola, says the concessioning of ports has eliminated the problem of casualisation in maritime operations in the country.
Sunmola who stated this at a forum in Abuja, said Stevedore is someone who loads and unloads ships, typically working in a team which includes a large number of stevedores to ensure that the process is smooth and efficient.
Sunmola said the casualisation of maritime labour and poor wages which was rampant before the concessioning of the ports to stevedoring companies was now a thing of the past.
According to him, “before the advent of the present set-up we have, there is the issue of casualisation but I am proud to say in Nigeria today, there is no maritime labour that is under casualisation.
“There has been a tremendous reform, there has been a tremendous change whereby workers are earning commensurately well and they are enjoying presently a good rate.”
He said that stakeholders in the maritime sector had gone further to also review the wages of maritime labourers for a period of time so that wage negotiations would no longer be an issue.
Sunmola noted that rather than just review wages for one year and begin negotiations for wage review the following year, stakeholders decided to do a percentage review covering a period of six years.
“I would say to a reasonable extent that they are happy because there have been negotiations year in year out, for instance, increment on their wages till the year 2014 has already been agreed.
“There is an implementation which is going on right now, another implementation in 2012 and the final one in 2014 so before you have another negotiation coming will be in 2014 and beyond,” the association president said.
