Rivers Women Cry Out As Consumer Goods’ Prices Soar
Women in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital have raised alarm over the outrageous increase in the price of consumer goods in the markets within the city.
Our Correspondent who visited some markets in the city reports that women who had just returned from the Christmas and New year holidays were shocked at what they described as an outrageous hike in the price of goodstuff.
A housewife, who gave her name simply as Mrs Woke said she managed to come back with her children from the village given the hike in transport fair, unknown to her that she was yet to experience the worst.
Prices of goods no doubt have risen beyond any reasonable explanation as families who hitherto made a pot of soup with N2,500 will have to manage between N5,000 and N6,000 to be able to make same quantity and quality of soup.
Mrs Hannah Nwanjoku pleads with the President and his Cabinet to temper justice with mercy so as to save the poor masses from what she describes as a pathetic situation.
“This is too high to bear, the government should please introduce measures that could cushion the effect of this subsidy removal” were the statement of Joy Ordu a female NYSC member.
The removal of the hitherto enjoyed Oil Subsidy by President Goodluck Jonathan in the wake of the new year, has really elicited mix reactions from different quarters so much that the massses are not thrilled by its long term benefit instead seek ways to cushion its immediate effect on the populace.
The Popular voice therefore, is that government should reconsider its stand on the policy as it would cause more untold hardship on the citizenry.
