AAG: Nigeria, Wins T ableTennis Gold
Nigeria at the weekend increased its medal tally, winning gold and silver in the table tennis mixed doubles at the ongoing 10th All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.
The country’s boxing team also picked three silver and a bronze in the boxing event.
Our correspondent reports that the duo of Segun Toriola and Funke Oshinaike won gold at the finals of the table tennis mixed doubles event after defeating compatriots, Monday Merotohun and Edem Offiong, 3-2.
To get to the finals, Toriola and Oshinaike had defeated their Egyptian opponents, 3-2 while Merotohun and Offiong also defeated their Egyptian pair to set up an all Nigeria finals.
In the 69kg boxing finals decided at the Extrila Venuhla, Nigeria’s south paw, Kehinde Ademuyiwa narrowly missed gold medal to Cameroonian, Joseph Mulema after a 10-10 decision by the judges.
Also in the 81kg category fight, Nigeria’s Lawal Lukman lost to Algeria’s Benchebla Asdelha to take silver while Efetobor Apoche who fought in the 91kg category also lost in the final to Boloudmet Chowa also of Algeria.
In the 75kg fight, Akanji Muyideen took bronze medal after he lost to an Algerian opponent who was more skillful and who dominated the three rounds of the bout.
