Bayelsa Utd’s Ouster Excites Gazelle Coach
Little known Gazelle FC of Chad on Sunday in Yenagoa ousted Nigeria’s Premier League defending champions, Bayelsa United from the CAF Champions League and their coach expressed excitement at the achievement.
In a post-match interview with newsmen after recording a 2-2 draw, Toukam Julien, described the 3-2 aggregate win as a big upset for his team.
Julien said the win over the two legs came as a big surprise because they never
expected to beat a club from Nigeria, regarded as a major soccer powerhouse in
Africa.
The Chadians won the first leg by a lone goal two weeks earlier in Njadmena.
“We never expected to beat the Nigerians because they play better football.
“I am happy with the outcome of the match, my boys played very well to contain
the Nigerians. It is a big win for us,’’ he said.
Julien said they would return home to prepare for their next game in the
championship.
Bayelsa United’s technical crew and management left the Samson Siasia Stadium immediately after the game.
