Onovo To Meet Cameroonian Police Chief Over Bakassi
Worried by the incessant reports of ill-treatment meted out to Nigerians resident in the Bakassi Peninsula ceded to Cameroon following the International Court of Justice Judgement of 2002 over its ownership tussle between Nigeria and Cameroon. The Inspector General of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo, has requested for an urgent meeting with his Cameroonian counterpart.
Onovo, according to reliable sources, “is willing to meet the Cameroonian counterpart in any place of his choice immediately, though he prefers the meeting to be in Bakassi where they both can hear from the horses’ mouth and see things for themselves “.
About 300 Nigerians have reportedly been tortured in the last few weeks by Cameroonian para-military forces in the peninsula who accused them of over fishing in the area and of not paying taxes to Yaoundé.
The gendarmes also claim that the Nigerians killed 21 of the para-military force enforcing Cameroonian laws in the place, for which between 17 and 21 Nigerians have reportedly been killed in retaliation..
Nigeria’s intelligence analysts, according to sources, have expressed doubts about the authenticity of the allegations against the Nigerians in the Peninsula, wondering how “civilians armed with fishing boats and nets, could kill as many as 21 armed gendarmes”.
Onovo is said to be angry that the Cameroonian government mobilised soldiers t o the Peninsula in the wake of claims that Nigerian citizens in Bakassi killed the gendarmes.
