UNDEDSS Opposes Planned Relocation Of NAPIMS
Any attempt, as is being contemplated by NNPC and the Petroleum Ministry, to relocate the NAPIMS [The National Petroleum Investment Management Services] from Lagos to Abuja, will be resisted by the peoples of the Niger Delta using all legitimate avenues and methods available to them. This warning was contained in a terse statement issued on Monday, November 23, 2009, by the United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Strategy (UNDEDSS).
Mr. Tony Uranta, UNDEDSS’ Secretary General, claimed in the statement that the coalition of Niger Delta ethnic nationalities and civil society had become privy to intelligence “of moves for the alleged relocation plan having reached very advanced stages; only awaiting ratification by the NNPC/NAPIMS Boards and the Federal Executive Council.” UNDEDSS’ President, Professor Pat Utomi, expressed concern that “some unpatriotic Nigerians are bent on rubbishing the good intentions of President Yar’Adua for peace in the Niger Delta.”
Utomi laments that “at a time when the Niger Delta State Governors and peoples are calling for a return of oil and gas multinationals to the region [which should be their natural locations, anyway], so as to create much needed jobs for the restive youths of the region, some selfish and unpatriotic people want to move the nation’s key organ for joint ventures in the petroleum industry away to a place that offers no economies of scale as far as the exploration or production of these resources are concerned” ‘Whilst the present location of NAPIMS in Lagos has been spuriously justified because of Lagos’ role as the nation’s capital,” Uranta asserted, “we must insist now that only a relocation of NAPIMS and its sister companies to the Niger Delta can bring about sustainable peace now, and lead to a future realization of Nigeria’s Vision 20:2020!”
