RSG Set To Upgrade Facilities In Education University
Plans are underway to upgrade facilities in the Rivers State College of Education following its elevation to a University by the State House of Assembly last week.
The State Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence Nemi gave this indication in a press chat with newsmen yesterday.
She stated that with the upgradement, the institution would increase the manpower quotient of the state in education and other disciplines that have direct bearing on the sustainable development of the area.
Dame Nemi said the new education university would be empowered to award professorships, readership and other posts and titles of a university, the award and conferment of degrees, including honourary degrees, diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions such as fellowship, bursaries and prizes.
Other gains she listed with the new elevation include being able to conduct consultancy services geared towards the promotion of knowledge in the area of need by the society at any level of academic pursuit.
The Rivers State Education Commissioner further stated that scholarships and research would be boosted with special focus on Technical Science, oil and gas, training of teachers and manpower development in general.
She commended the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi for taking the bold step towards actualising the dreams of the state, staff and students of the institutions.
Last week the state House of Assembly unanimous adopted the House Committee on Education report chaired by Hon. Maureen Tamuno by the state legislators.
The law aims at providing facilities for effective teaching and learning in education related disciplines with particular reference to the needs and aspirations of the state and the purpose of producing graduate and non-graduate teachers.
It would also produce teachers in technical science humanities, social sciences, management sciences and other related fields for development programmes in education.
