FERMA: Contractor Get Performance Deadline
Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has given contractors handling rehabilitation jobs on federal roads in the country between October and December, this year, to show evidence of work done to restore the damaged portions of the highway.
Managing Director of the agency, Engr. Kabir Abudullahi who was commenting on the decision of government to award contracts for the maintenance of 42 roads to the tune of N7.2bn, said President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has directed the organisation to ensure speedy restoration of the major highways to good conditions before the end of the year.
He said the contractors have been informed of the urgency of their assignment and the desire of government to see that smiles are brought back on the faces of the Nigerian motorists.
In the past, the agency operated a retainership agreement with some selected contracting firms which allows the contractors to move-in and fix the roads anytime it gets bad and latter submit claims to FERMA.
However, in pursuance of the demands of the new Procurement Law, federal government has directed every agency to subject every road rehabilitation contract to a competitive bidding process.
Some of the affected roads include, the IpeleIsua- Ayere- Kabba- Lokoja road, Minna- Tegina-Kontagora road, Lagos-Ikorodu-Itoikin road, Jos- Bauchi road, 9th Mile Corner-Obollo-Otukpo Junction road, AbujaKaduna road and Zaria-Kano road.
Others are Owerri-Port Harcourt road, Abeokuta-Ibadan road, AkwangaVom-Jos road, Egbema-Ahoada-Abua-Degema road, Ibadan-Oyo road, Apapa-Oworonshoki Dual Carriage way and Minna Suleja road.
