N20m Fine, Ban Await Match Fixers In NPL
In its quest to sanitise the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), its board has tabled the sum of N20m as fine for clubs that engage in match fixing and other corrupt practices that can bring the league to disrepute.
This was made known by the chairman of the NPL board, Chief Oyuike Obaseki during the Glo/NPL International seminar, at Royal Shekina Hotel, Ilorin at the weekend.
During the event, which was monitored from Port Harcourt, Obaseki said this is to stop further occurrence of the ghost of Zamfara United versus Kaduna United 9-0 scandal that rocked the past season.
According to him, besides, the fine the chairman and managers of such clubs would be summarily banned.
“This time around we are going to monitor matches and look into results critically, because the board has observed that club managers indulged in secret match fixing, but in the new season, it would not be business as usual,” he said.
The NPL chairman, used the opportunity to advise club managers to always exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship, saying that the essence of sports is to make friends through healthy competition.
“In this part of the world, I hardly see two coaches shake hands after match, I advise you to start that brotherly love no matter the outcome of matches,” he stated.
