Nigeria Beat Ghana In Hockey Nations Cup
Nigeria’s hockevy team at the ongoing African Hockey Nations Cup in Ghana is on course for a good finish in the competition.
The team headed to defeat Ghana to boost their lot and did exactly that to brighten their chances of meeting the target of bronze medal set by Nigerian Hockey Federation (NHF) President, Patrick Ukah.
Nigeria beat Ghana 2-1 in the ongoing Africa Hockey Championship at the national Hockey Stadium in Accra. It was the first win for Nigeria in a competitive match against their West African neighbours.
According to Tidesports source at the competition venue, Ghana got the encounter off on a good note, taking the lead through winger Joseph Appiah 28 minutes into the game, but the Nigerians fought back and levelled up through Adamu Kolo after the recess.
Ghana, determined to keep their world cup dream on course threw more men in front in search of the winning goal in the later part of the game, but paid for it as Nigeria’s Peter Sunday relied on a counter-attack to beat advancing keeper Aitkins Opoku-Danso four minutes to the end of the game.
It was Ghana’s second straight loss, having bowed 0-8 to South Africa in the opening game. The loss dashed Ghana’s hopes for playing in the final and will now be focusing on the third place fame where they are likely to meet Nigeria for second time.
The Nigeria male team lost their first match to Egypt (2-1) last Friday. The Nigerian female team also slumped 3-0 to South Africa but came back to beat Egypt 1-0 on Sunday.
