Implement Agreement With ASUU, Okocha Tells FG
Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Onueze C.J.Okocha has called on the Federal Government to implement in totality all agreements it had with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
Okocha said the action should be urgently taken to avert the total collapse of tertiary education in the country.
The legal luminary barred his mind at The Tide Roundtable, a weekly personality interview programme organised by the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, last Monday in Port Harcourt.
Okocha said, government has been unfaithful to the educational sector”, noting that the levity with which the authorities have continued to treat education matter was fast affecting both the secondary and primary schools as well.
He stressed that educational matters should be a concern to all level of government , from federal to local councils, while condemning the attitude of sharing responsibilities on issues affecting the sector.
Okocha who was a former commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General in the old Rivers State lamented depreciation in quality of graduates in tertiary institutions annually being turned out by tertiary institutions on account of inconsistencies in the school calendar.
On the fight against corruption, Okocha observed that the country still has weak institutions to fight the menace, hence its persistence.
He maintained that institutions like the judiciary, the police, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) created to fight corruption and check abuses of power should be strengthened in such a way to reduce manipulation and interference from the politicians.
On whether President Yar’Adua in his two years in office has performed Okocha responded, “to me not one of the seven-point agenda has been achieved”.
Contrary to what is happening at the federal level, the former NBA boss observed that in Rivers State, Governor Chibuike Amaechi is doing well by putting infrastructure on ground.
However, he stressed the exercise should be done in phases, expressing fears that a lot are being taken at the same time and needed to be done gradually to achieve the aim.
In addition, he suggested the need for the governor to set up a high-powered technical project monitoring team to ensure good quality of job, noting that it would save the governor the problem of going round to monitor projects himself.
Details of the Roundtable will come your way, Friday.
