Sports Minister Wants S’Eagles Made Competitive
The Sports Minister,
Tammy Danagogo, has urged the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and Super Eagles’ coaches to make the senior national team competitive.
In a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Patrick Omorodion, Danagogo also urged them to ensure that only the best players represent the country at all times.
The minister made this plea against the background of the Eagles Team B’s two recent friendly matches against Cote d’ Ivoire and Yemen.
The team lost 0-1 to Cote d’Ivoire in Abu Dhabi on January 11 and beat Yemen 2-0 in Dubai on January 17.
“With regular friendly matches for the Team B Eagles, the coaches will be able to beef up the first team for crucial matches with new players discovered.
“This is important as the Eagles prepare for the 2017 Africa Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifiers scheduled to begin soon after the ongoing 2015 edition.
“If the Team B gets regular friendly matches, the coaches will have a pool of players to select from to beef up the main team,’’ Danagogo, who is also Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), said.
He said the team’s technical crew has to make it competitive so that only the best would represent the country at all times.
The Sports Minister commended the NFA for arranging the recent friendly matches, and urged Nigerians to continue to support the Super Eagles.
“In spite of their failure to qualify for the ongoing Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea, we need to continue to support them.
“I am sure the NFA and the players have learnt from the mistakes of the past to make progress in the coming months,’’ he said.
