Commissioner Promises To Focus On Athletes’ Welfare
The newly appointed Commissioner for Sports in Rivers State, Hon Fred Mbombo Igwe has said that welfare of athletes would be place at the front burner by his administration in order to ensure that the state’s athletes win laurels.
Hon Igwe, stated, this while addressing management and players of Sharks and Dolphins FCs before they lest Port Harcourt on Monday for their respective venues to play the quarter final matches of the 2011 Federation Cup.
According to him, the worries of players of both teams over non-payment of their sign on fees and other allowances would be a thing of the past.
He continued that he would give all sports equal attention, saying that the era when everything centred on football was over.
“I will ensure that athletes are given adequate treatment in terms of welfare to ensure that the state excels in sporting competitions.
“I understand that before now football has been given more attention than other sports, but now that is over”, Igwe said.
The sports commissioner explained that both new and other sports facilities in the state will be maintained properly and improved to international standard.
