Increasing Road Accident Worries FG
Vice President Namadi Sambo last Wednesday in Abuja expressed concern at the rising cases of road traffic accidents in Africa.
Sambo, who spoke when he recieved Prince Michael of Kent in his office, called for an urgent intervention to arrest the situation.
“It is taking the lives of the citizens of our country that would hitherto be contributing toward our developmental efforts,” he said.
While commending Michael for his contribution toward ensuring safer roads in the country, Sambo said the visit would strengthen government efforts at addressing the menace of road traffic accidents.
The Vice President also reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to conducting free, fair and credible elections in 2011.
“I want to assure you that President Goodluck Jonathan is putting in all efforts to ensure that in 2011, we have a free and fair election in Nigeria and it will be one man one vote this time around,” he said.
He said the administration was determined to move the country from its decades of decay.
“This administration is an honest administration, it is transparent and it is an administration that belongs to the 50-year age bracket of our independence.
“ We are patriotic and we need to develop this country seriously and with all honesty,” he said.
Sambo, who recalled the warm reception he received during a visit to the United Kingdom, expressed appreciation to the government and people of that country for their continued support.
Earlier, Michael had said he was in the country to discuss road safety issues and the Black Thorne Foundation.
Michael, who commended the FRSC for ensuring safer roads, recalled that his sister, Princess Alexandra, was in Nigeria to represent the Queen during the country’s independence celebration 50 years ago.
Other members of the delegation were the Chairman of FRSC Board, retired Col. Lawal Gwadabe, FRSC Corps-Marshal, Osita Chidoka, and United Kingdom Acting High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peter West.
