Plan For Women Dev, FIDA Told
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Manuela George-Izunwa, has called on female lawyers in the state to create a holistic intervention plan for women development.
Mrs. Izunwa gave this charge during the week, when members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) paid her a courtesy call in her office.
The commissioner said the ministry is aimed at creating positive impacts in the lives of women in the state. She expressed joy on the achievements of the federation and encouraged them to go the extra mile in protecting women, especially widows against violence.
Mrs. Izunwa stated that in addition to the micro credit scheme for widows, growing into real life project, which is a career guidance programme for the girl child, will soon commence.
She also assured them that the ministry is ready to partner with the Federation towards creating a comfortable environment for women and the girl child.
The president of FIDA, Mrs. Florence Fiberesima congratulated Mrs. Izunwa on her appointment as the Commissioner for Women Affairs, saying that as a lawyer, she believes that the commissioner will ensure that the bill on harmful practices against widows will receive full consideration and be passed into law by the legislature.
Highlights of the visits were the inauguration of Mrs. Izunwa into FIDA and presentation of the Federation’s Annual Magazine and the Protocol of Widows’ Issues and Rights to the commissioner.
