PHED Workers Desert Sub-Station …As Power Situation Worsens In PH
The premises of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) Company at Nzimiro street in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area have been deserted by officials of the company, following the barricade of the sub-station by Irate youth of Ogbunabali Community earlier in the week. The Youths protested the non-availability of electricity in the community, despite their hosting of the facility for decades.
The Tide learnt that the protest has worsened the power situation in parts of Port Harcourt City such as Diobu, Agip and the Town axis of the city.
Some officials of the company, who spoke under condition of anonymity in an interview with The Tide said that they have been barred by Youth of the Community from entering the company’s premises.
They said that they need the assurances of the Community that nothing will happen to them, if they enter the premises to commence work.
However, in a swift reaction, some members of the community denied barring PHED officials from carrying out their duties at the company’s premises.
An indigene of the community, Prince William Chinwo said that no body was stopping the company’s officials from going in to do their work.
Prince Chinwo said that there was no time the community stopped the officials from performing their legitimate duties, noting that the community only protested the continuous blackout in the area on Monday and Tuesday.
Reacting, Public Affairs Manager, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED). John Onyi disclosed that although Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had concluded repairs and upgrade on facilities in Port Harcourt and its environs, consumers who get power supply from the Nzimiro Sub-station still have to suffer prolonged blackout because of the barricade of the Sub-station by youth of the host community of Ogbunabali, who staged a protest to the Sub-station last Monday.
Speaking with The Tide in an in interview yesterday, Onyi regretted that the action of the youth was increasing the sufferings of the company’s valued customers.
The PHED image maker said that TCN concluded repairs on the facilities last Saturday, and promised that the power consumers would soon enjoy better supply once the grievances of the youth were resolved.
He commended members of the public for their patience throughout the period of the repair and upgrade of the facilities.
