‘Amaechi, Jonathan Can Reconcile’
Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari said reconcilliation window between President Jonathan and Governor Chibuike Amaechi has not been shut.
Speaking to Government House reporters on Sunday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications said it is impossible to erase the brotherly ties between the President and Governor Amaechi.
She said, ” I think there is always a window for reconcilliation. You can never say never in any situation. I believe that the governor of Rivers State is first of all a Rivers man but he is also a Nigerian and has regards for the office of the President. The President is a Rivers man as far as we are concerned. He is part of us and therefore I am sure that between both as brothers, a person one older brother to a younger brother, one senior colleague to a junior colleague, there is always room for reconcilliation”.
Semenitari equally pointed out that the recent governor’s call on the president to return ceded Soku oil wells to Bayelsa State as condition to support the president’s 2015 ambition shows that all hopes between Amaechi and Jonathan to reconcile has not been foreclsoed.
On the Obio/Akpor Council dissolution Semenitari explained that the action is in tandem with the law. She reasoned that the governor only exercised his constitutional right, especially if he feels that the security in the area is threatened, urging those who feel dissatisfied to go to the courts.
The Commissioner further commenting on the Soku Oil wells controversy disclosed that the State Government had been protesting the ceding of the wells to Bayelsa State since 2006, stating that an agreement had been reached between the parties that the monies from the wells should be paid to an escrow account till of recent, when the account was broken and monies paid to Bayelsa.
Mrs. Semenitari lamented that several efforts of the State Government to get redress on the matter had failed hence the recent call by the State governor.
Meanwhile, Senator representing Rivers South- East in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe says the fight to regain Soku Oil Wells is a fight for all well meaning Rivers people.
Abe said, “Every Rivers man, woman, boy or girl should be concerned because this thing is not happening between Jigawa and Kano. It did not happen between Kebbi and Sokoto, it is only happening in the oil producing areas”.
The Senator submitted that the aim was to reduce the oil fortunes of the state, saying, any state that fails to protect its wealth has failed to protect its future.
