Customs Impounds Contrabands Worth N220.4m In April
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone C, in Owerri, Imo State has impounded contrabands with Duty Paid Value (DPV) worth N220.4 million in April 2013.
The seizure is higher than what was recorded in the corresponding period of 2012 by DPV of N1.84 million.
The Customs Area Controller of the zone, Mr Victor David Dimkpa disclosed this during a briefing in Owerri, recently.
Breaking down the seizures, Mr Dimkpa said the zone impounded a 20ft container of 429 big bales of second hand cloths with DPV in excess of N43 million along Eleme and Enugu-Nsukka-Makurdi road, 20 window blind, 24 bales of second hand blanket, 3 bales of table linen along Nsukka-Adani-Onitsha road.
He disclosed that 92 pieces of Guinea Brocades, 20 pieces of ladies footwear and 30 pieces of high target wrappers and 100 pieces of blanket were also seized during the period.
The Zonal Controller noted that cartons of imported frozen turkey and chicken, printed wax (hi-target), used hand bags, second hand clothing and blankets, imported furniture, imported rice and used shoes were impounded at different locations within the zone.
The list of seizures also has it 8,317 cartons of imported frozen turkey and chicken with DPV of N84.9 million, bags of rice, cartons of imported furniture, pairs of shoes (both ladies and men) as well as pieces of ladies hand bags and purses.
According to him, the achievement was as a result of the intensified fight against smuggling with the support of the present management of Customs Services under the leadership of Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko Inde, and assured to sustain the tempo.
He said the Customs headquarters has encouraged the zone with arms and ammunitions’, patrol vans and logistics, and further assured that his officers would not relent until smuggling is reduced to the bearest minimum.
“Smuggling of contraband goods and evasion of duty payment on dutiable imports have contributed to great loss in the nation’s revenue, Mr Dimkpa said, adding, “let me say without any contradiction that the whole success recorded within the month of April was achieved with the efforts of the gallant officers of the zone who vowed to be committed to their duties with the vision of the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Abdulahi Dikko Index.”
