Dana Inquest: Coroner Summons Minister, Witness
The coroner investigating the Dana plane crash, Mr Oyetade Komolafe, yesterday, directed that a witness summons be issued on the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah.
Komolafe also subpoenaed a pathologist, Prof. Adekunbi Banjo, to testify, following a request by the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB).
Reports say that 153 people on board the plane and some residents of Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos, lost their lives in the June 3, 2012 crash.
At yesterday’s proceeding, the coroner said it was appropriate for Oduah to appear before the inquest before its conclusion.
“Let the minister of aviation come and see what we are doing here and when she comes, we will have some questions for her”.
The coroner, who had earlier on February 28 rejected the AIB’s request to call Banjo, said the pathologist would be allowed to testify in the interest of fair hearing.
He directed that Banjo should appear before the court on May 22, but did not give a specific date for the minister to honour the summons.
Komolafe said that the minister was at liberty to choose a day from May 20 to May 24 – the dates fixed by the court for further hearing of the matter.
Addressing the court earlier, Mr Babatunde Irukera, AIB’s counsel, insisted that Banjo’s testimony would assist the coroner in coming to a just and meaningful conclusion of the inquest.
Irukera said the pathologist had worked previously with the AIB on other crashes.
He said Banjo was being called to refute some of the claims made by Prof. John Obafunwa, the Chief Medical Examiner of Lagos State.
“She needs to explain why she was excluded from the team that conducted the forensic and pathology investigations on the bodies of the crash victims.
“It will do a disservice to the memory of the victims if she is not allowed to testify because her testimony is critical to this inquest,” Irukera said.
However, Mr Akinjide Bakare, counsel to the Lagos State Government, said that the calling of additional witnesses was aimed at delaying the conclusion of the inquest.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
