RSG To Implement Sanitation Module Next Year
Rivers State Government is to implement the new sanitation module early next year, saying that the plan would comprise house-to-house collection of refuse monthly.
The Commissioner For Environment in the state, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, made this knowN while fielding questions from newsmen, shortly after this month’s environmental sanitation exercise last Saturday, in Port Harcourt.
He explained that the new system is to ensure that refuse are properly disposed to make the city clean for a healthy living.
“Next year the ministry would commence the implementation of sanitation module from January.
The module will comprise house-to-house refuse collection monthly to ensure that Port Harcourt City is clean,” he said.
Hon Chinda stated that the ministry is working hard to keep the Garden City clean during this festive season, because dirts are heavily generated during this period.
“We have put all machineries in place to ensure that the state is clean during and after the xmas festival because people generate more dirts in festive periods.”
The Commissioner warned the public to resist bush burning, particularly burning of refuse in the street, saying that such attitude can cause health and environmental hazard.
In the same vein, the commissioner has given the residents of Elekahia House Estate four months to green outside their fence wall.
According to Hon Chinda, he does not see any reason why the estate should not be clean and frowned at the poor sanitary nature within and outside the estate.
“I am personally not happy with the poor sanitary culture here, Elekahia Housing Estate should be one of the best in the state, infact it should be a place to emulate” he said.
He continued that government would assist in the improvement of the area as soon as they see seriousness, adding that, the ministry has intention to establish RivGreen project, aimed at planting flowers and grasses in the area.
Earlier, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Godwins Rufus had called on all companies to clean their environment.
