Transmitter Breakdown Stalls Radio Anniversary Celebration
The proposed 10 year anniversary of Gloryland FM, the Bayelsa State owned Radio Station has been put on hold.
This is because the transmitter installed 10 years ago has packed up and the station has been off – the air for the past two weeks.
The Tide gathered that arrangements had been conclude to celebrate a decade of services to government and people of Bayelsa State when the “devil” struck to thwarts the ceremony.
Apart from the problem of spoilt transmitter, it was also gathered that the state Accountant-General was reluctant to release funds approved by the state governor Chief Timipre Sylva for the occasion.
A close source, and staff of the station told The Tide that it may require the acquisition of a new transmitter for the radio station to come on air.
“It present, judging from the precarious financial situation of the state, it is doubtful whether government can afford new transmitter now,” he said.
Already some journalists from the State expressed disappointment over the condition of state owned media houses in the state.
A staff of “New Waves” a newspaper run by the state, was angry that the paper has not been publishing in the past five months.
Two weeks ago, the contractor that build the GloryLand Television locked up the building, because the state government was owing him N24 million.
Efforts by The Tide to speak with the General Manager of Radio Bayelsa Mr. Thompson Clinton was not successful as he was said to have travelled out on official duties.
