Senate Pledges To Boost NMDC Budget
The Senate Committee on
Power, Steel and Metallurgy has promised to facilitate a hike in the funds allocated to the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC), Jos, in the 2012 budget.
Sen. Philip Aduda, the Chairman of the committee, made the pledge on Tuesday in Jos when members of the committee visited the centre to assess the progress of activities there.
“We have gone round and have seen that much work is required at the institution, particularly in the area of infrastructure.
“As a research institute, the NMDC needs to be a centre of excellence to ensure that metallurgy researches are properly carried out,” Aduda said, describing the centre as the nucleus of the country’s metal industry which required additional funding to function optimally.
He said the committee had observed that many necessary machines and furnaces were not yet in place and promised that the committee would collaborate with the supervising ministry to ensure that more funds were provided.
The committee chairman said that for the country to be among the top 20 industrialised nations in the year 2020, the metal industry must be developed, a situation that underscored the need for a strong NMDC.
Earlier, the Director-General, Prof. Ibrahim Madugu, had told the committee that the centre was saddled with conducting research and development work for the advancement of the solid minerals and metals sector of the economy.
Madugu listed the centre’s achievements to include the characterisation and development of the Itakpe iron ore deposits to meet the requirements for iron and steel making through the blast furnace technology.
He said that plans had been evolved to transform the centre to a commercially viable entity, capable of generating revenue to support its activities.
The director-general identified areas capable of raking in revenue as iron and steel making, foundry technology, lead and zinc smelting, beneficiation of tin slags into niobium-tantalum, as well as refractory studies.
He said the NMDC had secured collaborations and linkages with local and international organisations in its effort to offer comprehensive, excellent and effective research and development.
Madugu said the centre’s main challenge was inadequate funding, stressing that the situation had affected the quest for additional raw materials and consumables.
Another challenge, he said, was the upgrading of power supply to the 33KV line in order to effectively make use of such facilities as electric arc furnace.
