‘Uniform Men To Obey Traffic Rules’
The River state government is accusing solders and other uniform personnel of total disregard to traffic rules.
The Commissioner for Transport Hon. George Tolofari stated this at the Niger Delta Safety Risk Movement workshop in Shell Residential area in Port Harcourt, recently.
The Commissioner lamented the huge cases of indiscipline on roads in Port Harcourt by uniform personnel and some government officials who take advantage of their position to violate traffic rules.
He said the activities of these security personnel had contributed to the poor traffic situation in Port Harcourt.
Hon. Tolofari noted that it was for these reasons that government was willing to partner with Shell Petroleum Development Company on the Niger Delta Road Safety Risk Management Programme.
SPDC Managing Director, Mutiu Sumonu said the Niger Delta Road Safety Management Programme was a partnership between SPDC and United Nations to reduce cases of road accidents in Niger Delta areas.
The Shell Managing Director who was represented by SPDC Assistant Manager Land East, Chidube Nnene Anochie said it was a 10 year action plan by the United Nations for road safety.
He said in this partnership, Shell would generate ideas that would help build local road safety capacity through education and enlightenment. He added that for this programme to be successful governments’ support was needed.
Earlier in his remarks, the African Coordinator for the Global Road Safety Partnership, Dr Peter Venter said time was needed to support a positive attitude towards traffic management skills.
The workshop had in attendance representatives of the Nigerian Police, Federal Road Safety Corps and the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority.
