Navy Holds Medical Outreach To Mark 66th Anniversary
The Nigerian Navy, Central Naval Command (CNC) has organised a free medical outreach for the people of its host community, Agudama-Epie in the Yenagoa Council area of Bayelsa State.
The programme, which was part of activities commemorating the 66th anniversary of the existence of the Navy, included free eye test and distribution of glass, HIV test, and dental checks.
Also included in the medical outreach were distribution of drugs, and laboratory investigation.
The Tide gathered that June 1 annually has been set aside to celebrate the Nigerian Navy Day.
Speaking during the medical outreach programme, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), CNC, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, said the gesture was to further prove the command’s commitment to boosting its relationship with the host community.
He said the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral A.Z. Gambo, has directed the Central Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy, to carry out a free medical outreach to its host community, as part of the celebration.
The FOC, CNC, who was represented by the Chief Staff Officer, CNC, Commodore Clement Atebi, said the free medical services offered by the Navy include “eye tests and free eye glasses, dental care, with tooth paste and brushes, anti-malaria medication and blood sugar test”.
He noted that the initiative was one of the ways through which the Navy was reaching out to the poor and the needy in the society.
“The Nigerian Navy is using this opportunity to fulfill and carry out its corporate social responsibility to the people, in marking its anniversary celebration. Our objective is to render free medical service to the poor and the needy in the society,” he said.
Also speaking, the Paramount Ruler of Agudama-Epie Communitiy, King Gospel Aputapu, lauded the Nigerian Navy for the free medical outreach to his people, urging the Navy to also give a quota to the host community during recruitment exercise.
He also emphasised that the indigines of the host community were willing and fit to enlist into the Nigerian Navy.
The Agudama-Epie monarch further appealed to the Nigerian Navy to assist the community in curbing the menace of insecurity, saying that their readiness to do so would safeguard the lives and properties of the people and residents.
A beneficiary of the eye test, Mr Emmanuel Otavie, 70, who was screened and given free eye glasses also lauded the Navy for the medical outreach.
