Rivers Commences Plans For CARNIRIV
Rivers State Government, says it has begun plans to host this year’s Rivers Carnival(CARNIRIV) in December.
Briefing newsmen after the inaugural exco meeting, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, and her Culture and Tourism Ministry counterpart, Dr Nathaniel Imegwu said the state had commenced early preparation in order to organise a world class cultural festival.
The Information and Communications Commissioner disclosed that plans were on to partner with organisers of the London and Nothingham festivals to boost attendance and reach of the festival.” What has been done so far is to make sure that the state hosts a very exciting cultural festival”, she said.
She stated that the Government would not wait for the passage of the bill establishing an agency to oversee the management and organisation of the festival.
Currently, the bill which seeks to institutionalise the festival is still at its first reading in the State House of Assembly
Explaining further, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Imegwu said the festival had over the years improved drastically, submitting that, “it is the thinking of government that CARNIRIV can best be handled by the Ministry pending the establishment of a statutory body.”
Responding to what the government was doing to address the poor roads condition in the city, Mrs Semenitari remarked that the council had directed the Commissioner for Works to commence work immediately the rain subsides.
The Commissioner maintained that plans were underway to ensure that about 10 of the ongoing road projects including schools were commissioned before the end of the year. Some of the roads include, the Chief Godspower Ake Road, and the re-constructed, Olu-Obasanjo Road and UST by-pass, the Ken Saro Wiwa Road and Ada-George Road.
She stated that government had urged contractors handling these projects to expedite action to meet deadline, adding that, “ once the rain gives us a breather, earnest work will commence on the projects.”
“Government understands the inconvenience the citizens are passing through because of constructions delays and rains”, Semenitari said, and pleaded with the citizenry to be patient with government, assuring that immediately the rains subside by October, remedial action would be taken.
