HYPREP Assures Proper Execution Of Water Projects In Ogoni
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Pro-ject (HYPREP), has assured that contractors handling the ongoing water projects in six locations in Ogoniland in Rivers State would deliver them according to specification.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees, HYPREP, Mr. Mike Nweilaghi, gave the assurance during the flag-off of the projects in Kpean Community in Khana Local Government Area recently.
He said the board which is responsible for approving funds for execution of projects in HYPREP would ensure that funds would only be released to contractors that have shown proofs of competence in executing the water pro-jects according to specification.
He assured that the execution of the water projects would not be business as usual, as the board would ensure strict monitoring and supervision of the projects, and release funds to only contractors who deliver quality and standard jobs.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Environment, Dr Muhammad Mahmood Abukakar, recalled that the Federal Executive Council had recently approved N6.4 billion for execution of water projects in the four Ogoni local government areas of Rivers State including Gokana,Tai, Khana and Eleme, and hinted that the projects are sited in six locations in Ogoniland.
The minister, who flagged off the water projects, said as part of the recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report, HYPREP has put machinery in place for the training of 400 Ogoni women, as part of measures to restore the livelihoods of the people of the area.
The Acting Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Prof Philip Shekwolo, said the water projects, which he described as a dream come true, would go a long way in improving the living conditions of the people of Ogoni when completed, and urged the people of the area to always support and cooperate with the agency to deliver on its mandate.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
