Don’t Site Petroleum University In Kaduna -Bayelsa Assembly
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the recent federal government decision to site a petroleum university in Kaduna.
Spokesman of Bayelsa Assembly, Hon Jonathan Obuebite, who picked holes in the plan during an interview at the Port Harcourt International Airport, on Sunday said the Assembly and the people of Bayelsa State were in support of the stand of the South-South state governors who condemned the proposed siting of Petroleum University in Kaduna, a situation he said was part of efforts to continue using the resources from the South-South to develop the northern states.
Hon Obuebite called on other states’ Houses of Assembly to challenge the federal government’s move, stressing that rather than siting the petroleum university in Kaduna, the federal government should upgrade the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Effurum, Delta State to university status. Otherwise, he said the project should go to Bayelsa State which has not witnessed any federal government presence despite the huge revenue the state generates for the federal government.
He explained that president Musa Yar’Adua has a good plan for the country and the Niger Delta region in particular, but regretted that some persons in the federal executive council FEC were trying to derail him from executing his plans to develop the on-going neglected region.
The Assembly spokes man however, urged the federal government to urgently revert the decision, stating that such decision is tantamount to causing another crisis, especially at this time of amnesty that peace is about to return.
