210 Rivers Youth Get Group’s Scholarship
The Coalition of Concerned Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Western Aviation and Marine Business Academy (WAMBA) have partnered to roll out an innovative scholarship scheme for indigent youth of Rivers State.
While launching the scholarship scheme on the sidelines of activities marking the 2017 International Youth Day in Port Harcourt, the collaborators said that 210 indigent youth from across the 23 local government areas of the state have been selected, based on merit, to benefit from the life-changing awards.
Speaking at the event, President, Coalition of Concerned NGOs, CBOs and CSOs, Comrade Christian Obi stated that the organisation would continue to complement the efforts of the Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration to ensure the success of the state’s targets in achieving excellence in education development.
Obi stated that the scholarship was the second laudable initiative being embarked upon by the coalition in a bid to promote and encourage good reading culture among school children in the state.
He noted that the coalition decided to key into the International Youth Day celebrations to roll out the scholarship scheme in partnership with WAMBA because of its significance to the realisation of the dreams of the youth.
Obi revealed that the 210 beneficiaries would receive full sponsorship of everything they need to complete their academic pursuits as students in various tertiary institutions, noting that the first semester forms for the 210 qualified youth had been released to enable them undertake studies in National Innovations and Professional Diploma Programmes through the various NGOs in the state.
Also speaking, Chairman, Scholarship Committee of the coalition, Dr Abel Awani explained the importance of the free academic empowerment scheme to the future of the youth, and challenged the beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity to carve a niche for themselves.
Abel, who also doubles as secretary of the coalition, hinted that measures were underway to commence the distribution of free 20,000 High Quality Exercise Books to the most brilliant students from select public secondary schools in the state.
