NUC Okays Preparations For RSU Teaching Hospital
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has stated its satisfaction over ongoing preparations for the take-off of the Rivers State University (RSU) Teaching Hospital.
Making the statement recently, when a verification team of the NUC visited the university, leader of the team, Professor Edward Nwachi, noted that “establishing a medical college is a serious business”.
Earlier, during the inspection by the NUC team, the Rivers State Government stated that towards ensuring a befitting Teaching Hospital for the Medical School of the university, medical equipment has been ordered for.
Disclosing this while addressing the verification team, the State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku, said this is in addition to “approving a site for the take-off of the Teaching Hospital and signing into law the Bill for its establishment”.
He described the visit of the NUC as “a jubilee gift to the people of the State”, noting that “the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike is irrevocably committed to put in place the best Teaching Hospital in the country”.
Speaking at the occasion, Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Blessing Didia, described the NUC’s visit as “a milestone in the history of the university”.
According to him, “it signals the realization of the long term dream of the university to own its Medical College since the years of College of Science and Technology”.
He explained that towards fulfilling this ultimate objective, the university has concluded plans to admit its first set of students into the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry.
The NUC team was in the institution to ascertain its readiness to commence the proposed College of Medical Sciences.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
