INTEL Laments Over Dwindling Economy

L-R: Deputy Comptroller General of Customs (Exercise and Tariff), Mrs Banke Adeyemo, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State And Comptroller General of Customs, Retired Col. Hameed Ali, during the visit of the CG to Government House in Ibadan rccently.
One of the leading port
concessionaires in Nigerian Maritime Industry, Integrated Logistics Services Limited (INTEL), said the company like every other concessioned terminal is bleeding because of the dwindling economy that is affecting the industry.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of INTEL, Mr Isidore Sambo, made this known while reacting to an alleged sacking of 1,600 workers of the company as the Nigeria Lobour Congress (NLC) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) plan to picket the company.
Sambo said INTEL is re-organising its workforce just like every other company in the maritime sector, pointing out that vessels no longer call at INTEL, operators of the oil and gas free zone areas in Onne, Rivers State, with other operations in Warri, Delta State and Calabar, Cross Rivers State.
He hinted that the recent Federal Government economic policies had drastically affected the company as it could no longer maintain its workforce, especially the dockworkers.
“Companies are going through re-organisation at the moment because of the economy, so just like every other company, we are also going through re-organisation,” the image maker lamented.
According to him, “INTEL has been badly hit just like every other terminal operator, everybody is weighing what to do and we are also in the same process”.
On the number of workers to be sacked, Sambo said, “The process is not completed yet, so I cannot confirm the sacking of any body yet, anybody quoting that figure, I have no idea about it, I cannot speak for the union (NLC), I have not had any contact with them, its up to them”.
It would be recalled that over 500 workers especially in the junior cadre were sacked last month due to the economic hardship in the country.
The Tide learnt that those affected were asked to be on standby pending when things would improve, and that the exercise was not to witch-hunt anybody or group of persons in its employ.
