MWUN Boss To Support PH Jetty Project

time Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Nembe/Bonny/Bille water-front, Creek road, Port Harcourt, Comrade David Teke, has assured the Rivers State Government that they are 100 per cent ready to assist the government on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Nembe, Bonny, Bille jetties.
Teke, who dropped the hint in a telephone interview with The Tide on Tuesday, said the project is so important to them that whenever the government is ready, they would support it by ensuring that the project goes on hitch-free and is completed as scheduled.
He opined that the deplorable condition of the present jetties could best be described as a “death trap”, and appealed to the government to expedite action.
According to him, the maritime union executives, boat operators and the teeming passengers heaved a sigh of relief when the action governor of the state, Chief Nyesom Wike during an unscheduled visit to the area recently promised to reconstruct and rehabilitate the jetties.
The union boss noted that they are optimistic that the Nembe, Bonny, Bille Jetty project would kick-off soon, and it would be one of the major riverine projects executed by the administration in his second year in office.
Teke also noted that with the quality of road projects embarked upon by this administration, he has implicit confidence that the jetty project would also be of standard, stressing that the project when completed would boost marine transportation and give the people a sense of belonging.
It would be recalled that the governor, Nyesom Wike during the visit said he would revamp the area in order to develop effective marine transport in the state.
He said that Julius Berger Nigeria Limited will be engaged to revamp the waterfront such that some of the shanties and makeshift landing jetties with parking lots for vehicles.
“I am not happy with the condition of this important jetty. That is why we will reconstruct the jetty and uplift the standards to enhance safe marine transport.
“We will also reconstruct the road leading to the jetty so that trucks and passengers can have access to the facility”.
