Synod Demands Implementation Of Post-Amnesty Programme
The Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Asaba has urged the Federal Government to put in place instruments for the full implementation of the post-amnesty programme.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 12th synod of the diocese, signed by Rt. Rev. Justus Mogekwu, the Bishop of the diocese.
Other signatories to the communiqué, made available to newsmen in Asaba on Tuesday, were Justice Frank Nwulu, the Chancellor General; Mr Ben Okeke, a Communicator and Mr Ifeanyi Nwabuoku, the Registrar of the diocese.
The communique noted that the post-amnesty programme should be implemented by providing gainful employment for the ex-militants in the Niger Delta and the general development of the region.
The synod lamented “the awful and wanton massacre of innocent Nigerians in Jos and the unsatisfactory rehabilitation of the victims”.
It therefore, urged the federal and state governments to take appropriate actions to forestall a recurrence of the incident.
The synod also expressed dissatisfaction with the poor performance of students in the nation’s Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC and NECO) as well as the JAMB examinations.
It called for total overhaul and revitalisation of the education system, saying “the synod believes that the handing over of schools to missions would enhance performance.”
The communique called for total reform and strengthening of the army, the police, the SSS and immigration service to boost their performances.
It said the call for the strengthening of the security agencies was predicated on the current increasing rate of kidnapping, armed robbery, thuggery and other vices, especially in the Niger Delta region.
The synod urged governments, churches, NGOs and individuals to assist in tackling corruption, cultism, homosexuality and other vices ravaging the country.
