Nigeria Leads Tilapia Fish Market, Soon
The Nigeria Coordinator,
West African Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP), Prof. Damien Chikwendu, by Nigeria would soon begin to raise tilapia fish to meet its high demand.
Chikwendu said this on Monday, in Ibadan, during the opening ceremony of an Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme in Aquaculture business organised by WAAPP in collaboration with the University of Ibadan.
He said that the demand for tilapia fish in the country was high and encouraging increased production would ensure that it was effectively met.
He described Nigeria as a very vast nation in aquaculture and a leading country in catfish production.
“This programme is centred on training the fish farmers and engaging the unemployed youths in making career from fish farming.
“Aquaculture is a value chain starting from production to marketing and then consumption.
“Participants will at the end be supported with start-up capital and fish smoking kits,’’ he said.
He said that the organisation was also working toward the production of fish feeds in the country to reduce its importation thereby reducing the cost of operating the fish business.
The Head, Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, Prof. Bamidele Omitoyin, said that WAAPP had organised the programme to train the youths in fish farming business.
He said that the one-month training programme involved practical applications, adding that participants would be taught all aspects of fish farming and business.
“I am very optimistic that these set of participants are the future of the nation.
“I also want to implore the government to support the programme by sending their unemployed youths to the training at the University of Ibadan.
Omitoyin said that the importation of feeds and its non-affordability by farmers were part of the problems facing fish problems.
He said that most farmers could not access funds due to lack of collateral facility and do not have access to markets, where their profit could be maximised.
Chikwendu was represented by Dr Oludare Adeogun, the Programme Officer, the National Centre of Specialisation in Aquaculture.
The fully funded one-month training programme in aquaculture business will be attended by 30 participants selected from different parts of the country.
