The Rivers State Internal Revenue service (RIRS) has threatened to drag tax defaulting companies and individuals in the state to court for refusing to perform their civic duties of tax payment.
In a statement in Port Harcourt, RIRS pointedly advised companies which have issues with their taxes to endeavour to contact it for clarification to avoid prosecution.
According to the revenue agency, the statement serves as a final warning to defaulting companies for payment of their taxes.
It would be recalled that following the reorganization and autonomy granted RIRS, Rivers internally-generated revenue significantly rose from N2.5bn in 2008 to N7bn last year.
However, with dwindling oil income and the closure of the courts in Rivers State, the pressure on internally-generated revenue to provide essential services has become acute. Following the reopening of the courts by the government of chief Nyesom Wike, RIRS has warned “companies to be ready to face the full weight of the law as courts in Rivers State are now reopened and thus they have no excuse to default”.
Our reporter gathered that already, auditors in the service have perfected their files to begin filing of cases against defaulting companies so as to jolt others into awakening to their civic duties of tax payment.
