Group Tasks Commercial Drivers On Safety
A Non-Governmental
Organisation, Safe Route Mandate (SRM) has advised commercial drivers plying the Iloabuchi-RSUST route to always be safety conscious and observe traffic rules while discharging their business.
The co-ordinator of the group, Peta Ledum gave the charge Friday at a seminar held in Port Harcourt.
Ledum said it is by being conscious of their lives and those of their passangers and observe all necessary traffic rules that they could be viewed as responsible operators.
He expressed disappointment over what he described as reckless and irresponsible manner some of the commercial drivers on the route operate.
“It is mark of irre-sponsbility for a driver to always park at the middle of road to load or off load. By so doing, you directly obstruct the others coming behind you,” he said.
According to him, regular checks on the route have shown that such attitude has become a norm and urged the unions covering the commercial drivers in the area to prevail on their members to observe traffic rules.
He equally called on the law enforcement agencies to check the recklessness of the drivers for the interest of other road users.
