LG Poll: Ex-Obio/Akpor Boss Drums Support For RSIEC
A former Chairman of Obio/Akpor local Government of Rivers, Dr Lawrence Chuku, said yesterday that the decision of the State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct local government elections was a welcome development.
The commission had fixed May 23 for elections in 22 of the 23 local government areas in the state.
Chuku told newsmen in Port Harcourt that critics of the commission should rather support the move because it would make the local governments to have elected representatives.
‘’ The move is a step in the right direction.
“ The conduct of local government elections in the state has been awaited by the people and it is aimed at giving the people at the grassroots a sense of belonging,’’ he said.
Chuku said the elections could have been held nine months ago but was delayed because of the challenges that followed the issuance of Permanent Voter Cards by INEC.
He also said there was nothing wrong holding the council polls after the general elections.
‘’The conduct of local government is within the powers of the State Independent Electoral Commission elections.
“ Also, notice had been given for the election and it is up the registered political parties to cue in and take part,’’ he said.
Chuku, an APC chieftain in Rivers State, said he would contest the election to serve as chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government for a second term.
He said if given the mandate, he would initiate an impactful empowerment programme for the people at the grassroots
