FRSC Warns Politicians Against Covering Road Signs With Posters
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has called on politicians and their supporters to desist from covering road signs with campaign posters.
The commission also warned them to stop violating traffic rules, especially during their electioneering campaigns.
The call was made on Wednesday by Corps Commander Imoh Etuk, the Corps Public Education Officer of the commission, during an interview with The Tide source in Abuja.
According to Etuk, the commission has the duty to ensure road safety in the country before, during and after elections.
“The FRSC management under the stewardship of Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi, has directed all commanding officers of the Corps to raise the bar on sensitisation and enforcement during elections.
“We have been carrying out public advocacy on road safety at different places in the country including motor parks , radio and television stations, as well as newspapers, posters and sign posts.
“We implore politicians and their supporters to avoid night trips, violation of speed limit, reckless driving and overloading of vehicles during rallies.
“They should also avoid covering road signs with their campaign posters so that every road user can see the instruction on road usage.
“The corps marshal has said that any form of enlightenment without enforcement translates to entertainment, hence the need to ensure sanity on highways through enforcement of traffic laws,”he said.
Etuk said the commission planned to curb indiscipline on the nation’s roads using a roadmap which would be totally enforced to deter road users from violating traffic regulations .
He also said that the commission had recorded about 48 per cent reduction in road crashes between December 19,2014 to January 6,2015 in the country.
He said this was as a result of staff commitment, cooperation of sister agencies and other stakeholders in the traffic sector.
The spokesman enjoined road users to give priority to safety at all times, especially as the nation prepares for general elections in February.
