Ahead November Poll: We’re Best Option For Anambra – PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared itself the best option for the masses in the Nov. 8 governorship election in Anambra State.
The state chairman of the party, Mr Chidi Chidebe, who said this in an interview with The Tide source in Awka, the state capital on Saturday, said the party remained the most active and formidable opposition in the state.
According to him, PDP is the only party that can unseat the incumbent government.
He said, though the party had suffered setbacks both at the national level and in Anambra, it remained the best option for the masses as it guaranteed inclusiveness and the best participatory democratic environment.
He said under his leadership, PDP in Anambra State had become active and viable with the constitution of six standing committees already working to ensure the party regained its lost grounds.
He said the committee were: Strategic Planning and Policy Development Committee, Grassroots Mobilisation and Outreach Committee, Reconciliation and Unity Committee, Fundraising and Resource Mobilization Committee, Media and Communication Committee and State Elders Committee.
The party chairman said major activities in the party ahead of the election would commence after the primaries, adding that individual aspirants were doing what they should be doing.
“This is the first time that we are having standing committees for the party; they are formed to make sure that everybody can participate in one or the other activity within the party and also ensure we run consistently.
“PDP is the only political party in Nigeria which has a defined agenda and ideology, others do not have concrete arrangements in their formation unlike us. It is only when people feel aggrieved they go to them.
“In Anambra, PDP is formidable and we are contesting the Nov.8 election to win; we are going to participate actively in that election,” he said.
Mr Chidebe said the incumbent government in Anambra State had shortchanged the people in terms of delivery of dividends of democracy and that the PDP would fix the state.
He said there were a number of things that were not going well under the current government in Anambra State including increasing insecurity and shrinking democratic space.
“Let me tell you, we need a liberal government, a government that is participatory where people can air their views and discuss.
“Government cannot sit in the hands of people or somebody that feels he knows it all; such a government does not make progress.
“The best thing that any leader and the best quality any leader can possess is the ability to harness ideas and talents and be able to put them to use,” he said.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
