LG Polls: Rivers Women Hail Oniyide, Barasua Over Victory
As reactions trail the just concluded local government elections in Rivers State, Rivers women, under the aegis of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NiLowV), Rivers State Chapter, have described the emergence of Hon Mrs Tonye Briggs Oniyide as Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Council and Mrs Anengi Barasua Claude Wilcox as chairman of Bonny Local Government Council in the election as a victory for all Rivers women.
The league also described it as one of the best things that have happened to Rivers women.
This was contained in a press release made available to newsmen and signed by Adolphus Wonder Press Secretary to state chairperson of the organisation, Lady Ruth Davies Ibiamu.
It said Rivers women are proud of their election victories, stressing that they have brought honour to not only members of the organisation but the entire Rivers women.
While congratulating them on their victory, Lady Ibiamu said Rivers women are proud of them.
According to the release,”their ascensions to the exalted position of Chairmen of Local Government Area is a divine will of God”
“Lady Ibiamu also admonished both chairmen to use their position of trust to put smiles on the faces of their constituents and empower women in their localities.”
Lady Ibiamu said women’s participation in politics is a game-changer for democratic stability, and urged the newly elected female chairpersons to see their positions as divine for the emancipation of women.
The release further stated that women in politics demonstrate remarkable strength and resilience, overcoming obstacles and breaking barriers in the political equation of any nation.
According to her. “women participation in politics is a tool to economic stimulus and impact to the growth of any nation.
She used the occasion to also congratulate the vice chairmen on their victory.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
