Ogoni Clean-Up: FG Assures On Improved Ogoniland, South-South
The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensure that all stakeholders and Ogoni sons and daughters are carried along under the Ogoni clean-up agenda in his administration.
The government stated that the initiative, “Na My Area, Na My Country” was basically to address the challenges of the economics well-being, to tackle environmental degradation and improve the livelihood of Ogoni people and the entire people of South-South States.
The Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement to President Bola Tinubu, Mrs Gift Johnbull, said this while engaging with stakeholders in Ogoni, at Nortem Hall, Bori, in Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State, on Saturday.
She said the meeting was also to access the level of work at the ongoing Ogoni Clean up and impact on the people of Ogoniland.
According to her, she was directed by the President to come, assess and improve the lives of Ogoni people through Community Engagement Agenda.
“The initiative is President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at bringing the Presidency closer to the people of the South-South.
“Our focus was all inclusion and collaboration to ensure lasting peace and development during the cleanup.
“This initiative is directed by the President to promote patriotism, community ownership and active presence of governance in host communities.
“We are here to discuss and evaluate significant empowerment initiatives, such as environmental remediation and all forms of improvement which will have a lasting impact on the lives of the Ogoni people”, Johnbull said.
Speaking at the event, Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, said the implementation of remediation of Ogoni environment is going on smoothly, adding that the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has certified 48 out of 50 of the simple sites remediated to be free of hydrocarbon pollution.
“Today, Ogoni clean-up is going on smoothly. We are taking serious steps on environmental remediation in terms of livelihood support, provision of good drinking water and strengthening the health system.
“One of the targets in the clean-up is to build the capacity of our youths. We will support the youth to actualise their potentials in life.
“We recently trained 300 graduates and undergraduates in proposal writing. As at today, we have planted 2,650 seedlings of mangroves”, Zabbey said.
Also speaking, the Gbenemene Bangha Kingdom, HRM King Suanu Baridam, advised the Presidency to give more powers to the Project Coordinator of HYPREP to enable him take some decisions on implementation of projects, that the over dependence on the Federal Government to carry out programme is slowing down the project.
“It is not proper that the Project Coordinator must go to Abuja for approval of all requests. He should be given some leverage to approve”, he said.
