Family Planning, Reproductive Right -RSG …As State Surpasses National Figures
As the world marked the World Contraception (Family Planning) Day, the Rivers State Government says every human being has the right to adopt any family planning method that suits its needs.
Speaking in a broadcast to mark World Contraception 2023 Day, State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, said everyone has right for reproductive freedom.
She explained that the state government is ensuring that all adults and young people of age make informed choices on family planning, adding that, “contraceptive options allow women to adapt to use and adapt contraceptives that are unique to them”.
According to her, the theme of this year’s celebration, “The Power of Options”, further underscores need for women to make informed choices on their sexual reproductive health.
The State Commissioner for Health stated that it has equally set up a social behavioral change committee to educate and enlighten the populace on why contraception is important in today’s society.
Meanwhile, figures made available by the National Demographic Health Statistics (NDHS) has shown that Rivers State has 19.6 per cent of family planning usage and is ahead of the, national figure of 17 per cent.
Citing figures from 2018 statistics, the state commissioner disclosed that the national target for use of contraceptives is set at 27 per cent.
To this end, she started that efforts are being made to raise the awareness in the State, as she sued for both private and public partnership.
“The State has built its capacity of health care providers in the public and private sectors to provide quality family planning”, Dr. Oreh said.
