The 2023 Bola Akindele Cup for U-15 Boys and Girls football competition will begin today at the Nigeria Railway Institute Football pitch, Ebute Metta, Mainland, Lagos.
The tournament, which is organised with the support of the Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association, will see 32 teams in the boys’ category and 24 teams in the girls’ class battle for trophies and prize money set aside for the winners up to the fourth-placed teams.
According to the organisers, the winner will pocket N400,000, the first runner-up gets N300,000, second runner-up N200,000 and N100,000 for the fourth placed teams in both categories.
At the unveiling of trophies, the sponsor and Chairman of Courteville Business Solutions PLC, Dr. Adebola Akindele, stated that the championship was borne out of passion to present a platform for the youth to showcase their talent, adding that this has led to many talents who went on to play for the country’s youth levels in the boys and girls’ categories.
“The company is sponsoring the competition not because of the profit, but we are doing this to empower the young footballers, who want to take football as their career. I am happy that some of the players who played in this tournament before are currently in the Golden Eaglets and female junior national teams. This is good news for us and we are still committed to sponsoring this tournament on q yearly basis,” Akindele said.
According to the Match Coordinator, Taofeek Ajibola, arrangements have been put in place for the opening match, while urging all the participating teams to abide by the rules.

Iwobi Optimistic On S’Eagles Qualification
Iwobi spoke to Tidesports source ahead of Nigeria’s crunch playoff semi-final against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old was reacting to Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Eagles finish second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” Iwobi told Tidesports source.
We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
The Fulham star pointed to Nigeria’s star power, highlighting African Footballer of the Year winners Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as proof of the squad’s quality.
“We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen),” he said.
“It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
Nigeria’s path to the United States, Canada and Mexico has been turbulent, with two coaches departing during the early stages of qualifying before Éric Chelle steadied the ship to steer the Super Eagles into November’s CAF playoffs.
Four nations from the continent – Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon – will vie for a solitary spot to compete in next March’s inter-confederation playoffs, with a view to joining the already nine qualified African nations at the Finals.
It would mark Iwobi’s second appearance at the World Cup Finals and the Super Eagles’ first since the 2018 edition of the competition.
Back then, Iwobi featured in all three games as Nigeria was knocked out in the group stage.
