RIWAMA Seals Off Refuse Dump In GRA
The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has sealed off a refuse dump at GRA, Port Harcourt.
The dump was situated at Professor Amba Ambaowei Street, by Greg Ogbeifun Road, GRA, Phase Three.
A number of persons who constructed shanties by the dumpsite were also arrested by officers of the Agency.
Speaking with newsmen, Chairman of RIWAMA, Chief Isobo Jack, expressed regret that inspite of past efforts to close down the receptacle people keep recreating it.
He said he was surprised that the dump has built up to this level.
The RIWAMA boss described the situation as unacceptable, saying: “We are even surprised that it has actually built up to this level. We have been here a couple of time”.
He said people keep creating the receptacle even when the Agency has closed it down several times, and vowed to arrest anyone found dumping refuse around the area.
The RIWAMA Chairman also advised refuse contractors to devise a new way of evacuating refuse as the present method seems not to be working.
He said even those dumping refuse should also think of a new method, adding that the Agency is committed to returning Port Harcourt to its garden city status.
Meanwhile, defaulters arrested during the exercise are to be arraigned before a Sanitation Court.
